The town continually searches for new ways to dispose of waste in a sound, environmentally safe manner. Environmentally-Sound Waste Disposal Programs Residents should contact those district or village offices directly to obtain information regarding collection or recycling schedules and practices. Information regarding collection in these district or village areas has been provided on the Sanitation Districts page. Other areas are serviced by Sanitation Collection Districts or local village governments. The Department of Sanitation collects waste and recyclables within the following communities: Barnum Isle, Bay Park, Bellmore, Bethpage, East Meadow, Harbor Isle, Levittown, Lido Beach, Merrick, North Lynbrook, Point Lookout, Salisbury, South Westbury, Seaford, Uniondale, and Wantagh. While the town is responsible for the disposal of all solid waste, the collection of this waste is divided among various government jurisdictions. That which is not recycled is processed in a state-of-the-art waste-to-energy facility, creating both an environmental and economic benefit for all town residents. Simply put, the department oversees the disposal of an estimated 670,000 tons of garbage each year. The department is responsible for the disposition of all solid waste generated within the boundaries of the town. The Department of Sanitation operates as the solid waste planning unit for the entire Town of Hempstead.
